What’s Your Soil Type?

Soil in the wood

If you’ve ever tried your hand at gardening, you’ve probably realized that not every type of plant is capable of growing and thriving in any environment. In fact, some plants really will not do well here in Utah. There are a few different factors that go into this fact, but the few things that affect it are the environment and the soil type. You need to understand each of these in order to figure out what type of plants will thrive in your garden and landscaping here in Utah.

Utah soil

It’s no secret that Utah is a desert. However, despite being a desert, it isn’t as harsh of a climate as some other desert areas, like Arizona, for example. And things can get even a little bit more complicated from there, because there are a few drastically different environments contained just within the state of Utah.

Soil generally consists of 25% water, 25% air, 45% rock and mineral pieces, and about 1%-5% organic material. And soil is one of the most important resources that we have.

Many areas of Utah have what is known as Midiva Soil, which consists of fine sandy loam(mostly sand, with some small amounts of silt and clay) that has a redish-yellow topsoil and pinkish-brown subsoil.

What does that mean for me and my garden?

With the knowledge of what kind of soil we have here in Utah, it actually makes it easier for you to find the right plants for you, that will thrive when planted in your yard. You’ll never have to waste money on plants that will just shrivel and die, never coming to fruition.
