When to Buy Produce

Fresh produce

Buying produce can rack up quite the bill, even though they is necessary to keep you and your family healthy.  However, you can save quite a bit of cash if you buy fruits and vegetables that are in season.  Not only that, but if you buy produce when it is in season, it will be much tastier than if you buy it when it is out of season.  Remember that you can also buy frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables to give you the nutrients that you need at any time throughout the year.  Read on to learn when different fruits and vegetables are in season, so that you know when you should buy them.  

 

Year Round Fruits and Vegetables

There are some fruits and vegetables that you can buy year round, enjoying their flavors at any time during the year.  

Fruits

Bananas and avocados are in season year round.  Apples seem to be in season year round, although they are typically harvested in the fall.

Vegetables

Carrots, potatoes, and celery are always in season, so you can buy them at any point in time.  

 

Spring Fruits and Vegetables

From mid-march to mid-june, there are delicious fruits and vegetables that grow quickly once life starts to grow again.

Fruits

Apricots, berries, cherries, grapefruit, lemons, strawberries, pineapple, and figs are available in the spring.  

Vegetables

Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms, onions, peas, radishes, and basil come to season starting in the spring.  

 

Summer Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits

Melons are quite fresh during the summer, as are berries (raspberries, blueberries, etc), kiwi, mangoes, nectarines, peaches, plums, etc.  

Vegetables

Tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, summer squash, peppers, and green beans are popular summer vegetables.  

 

Fall Fruits and Vegetables

Fall is known as the “harvest season,” so there are many fruits and vegetables that are just waiting for you to purchase them.

Fruits

Fall fruits include: cranberries, coconut, pomegranates, limes and pears.

Vegetables

There are many vegetables in season in the fall, including cucumbers, corn, eggplants, pumpkins, lettuce, sweet potatoes, and winter squash.

 

Winter Fruits and Vegetables

Some fruits and vegetables are hearty, and so they grow well in the cold winter months.  

Fruits

Citrus such as oranges and grapefruit, pears, papayas, pomegranates, and cranberries are in season during the winter.  

Vegetables

Many fall vegetables bleed into the winter months, but the most common vegetables for the winter are: cabbages, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, winter squash, and sweet potatoes.
